Why did the Admiral's son go underground? What is the chief-of-staff covering up? What is the involvement of the Public Affairs Senior Chief? Moveable Forts and Magazines explores the sibling themes of conscience and responsibility by examining the thoughts and feelings of two men-one young, innocent and practical; the other, older, experienced, and idealistic. Re-live six months in 1968 as you move from the skies over the Mekong Delta to the Admiral's headquarters to the anti-war group's coffee house. Officers, enlisted men, college students and newsmen act and interact, frequently on the basis of incomplete, inaccurate or deliberately falsified information.

This is a wonderful slice-of-life story taking place during the Vietnam Conflict. The story centers around a Jewish journalist in the navy who has achieved the 2nd highest enlisted rank, that of Senior Chief Petty Officer. The religion has little to do with the story; however, I suspect the journalist represents the author, who, according to the "JOMC" on the book's cover, eventually became a Journalist Master Chief Petty Officer (the highest enlisted rank).
The story takes place primarily in a California naval base and the neighboring town, with a few chapters set in Vietnam. The son of the Admiral commanding the base (a Lieutenant) was in the area on vacation and misses his plane ride which was to take him back to Vietnam, and joins an anti-war protest. Thereon hangs the tale.
There is good character development of several of the main characters. The book also demonstrates an ongoing conflict between experienced enlisted personnel and the often semi-experienced officers who make the final decisions.
Quite an enjoyable read for anyone, particularly if you've been in the military or were around during the Vietnam era.

Tarnished Brass Curtain A Novel of Vietnam Richard S Rose 9781439271131 Books Reviews
Tarnished Brass Curtain gives us a look at a different side of the war. An incident behind lines mushrooms and becomes just as threatening to Fred Heatherington as one on the battlefield. The son of a high-ranking officer, when he disappears shortly before he is scheduled to deploy, the brass scrambles. Every action taken, every word, must be carefully measured, or it could cost Fred his future and maybe even his life.
